I am a professional caregiver who uses my education and life experience to serve families concerned about an aging loved one. My responsibility is to assess the situation by clarifying the current issues within the context of the entire life span.
I am trained to remain objective, to feel compassion without losing focus. My goal is to help families find practical and realistic solutions to their concerns. My job is to remain disciplined in guiding families to make decisions and follow through with implementation.
In short, I help to:
Unscramble the situation while defining the players.
Provide choices and alternative solutions and education.
Motivate families to take action as formulated.
Support family caregivers by offering permission for role reversal, to take a
stand, to make an unpopular decision.
I coach, consult, and offer information about eldercare issues.
With time and with trust, I may serve as a surrogate family member or an integral member of the “caregiver team”.
One physician, after asking me several questions about my role with a client, finally said ....
“I get it. You’re like a rent-a-relative, but with experience and training.”
